3 Simple Steps That I’ve Took to Stop My Eviction!
If you are reading this, I want you to know that right now; I’m living the dream. I’m making $20K a month. I live in a penthouse, and I drive a red sports car (yeah, that one.) I’m happily married to my beautiful wife, and I have saved up a considerable college fund for my two little boys.
But if you had seen me six months ago, you wouldn’t be able to recognize me! You’d see me wearing a worn-out shirt, driving the garbage that I called my car. Waking up at 6 am every day, going to the office, just to be working the job I never dreamed of. And you’d be staring at me as I was unpacking the sandwich that I brought from home for lunch. I had negative 16 cents on my bank account. Yeah, I owned less than nothing.
And for a long time, I didn’t know how different things could have been. But more importantly, how different I could make them be. You see, we all have these silly expectations like how things can happen to us if we wish for them long enough. And then there are people waiting for that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come by. But that’s not the reality that we live in. You only have so many days left to do things that you like. To work for things that you want. So, every day you spend wishing for things, you waste another chance to reach for them in your lifetime.
I used to wish for a lot of things.
All my life I thought like I was different like I was going to be rich and famous. I thought that people around me were just too pessimistic, scared to take a risk, or even lazy. I thought it was just a matter of time for my dream to come true. But the thing is… they never did. You could be the most optimistic person in the entire universe, the most confident, or even the most competent. But your dreams will only come true if you make them be.
Soon, I’ve learned that I had to change my mindset.
After many years of letting things be while being hopeful, I’ve finally started to see things as they are. As soon as college was over, I now had to find a job to make a living. Until then, I always had the chance to make something of myself, but I never thought my time was running out. So, I’ve found a job that I didn’t like. I was working my butt off every day from 9 am to 5 pm.
How could someone achieve their dreams living a life like that?
But I was finally awake, and I knew I wasn’t living in the wonderland anymore. But unlike my other friends who quickly accepted the reality that they were given, I had something else for myself on my mind. I wanted a way out—a way out of this rat race to start living the life that I desired.
I wanted to be Free, Not just free as in having free time off work. I mean free to do whatever I want, whenever I want, wherever I want, and with whoever I want. I wanted to do what I like to do and get paid for it. Get paid enough to live my life without having to worry about my bills, my rent, or any price tags hanging down from something I want to buy.
And my passion in life was… Cameras. I like cameras, not only taking pictures with them but also open them up, repair them or even modify them. I wanted to live the rest of my life, writing about cameras, repairing them, modifying them, and getting paid for working around them.
So, my plan was simple, and I was going to start my repair shop. The problem was that I didn’t have the kind of money or the resources to get on it. But I knew that I didn’t have any more time to waste. I was already stuck at my lame job. At that very second, I had my first great idea popped into my head. I was going to open up online repair service.
The plan goes;
- My customers would ship me their broken cameras
- I would repair them
- And then I would ship their repaired cameras back to them
Simple. That way, I could also reach more customers instead of just making do with the people around my neighborhood. Everything was going to be online so that I wouldn’t have to spend any extra money which I didn’t own. And right after I set my mind to start my dream business, every day at work felt like a week in hell.
I took a bold chance; I’ve quit my job at once. I might have made a colossal mistake, but at least now I had the time to take my chance at doing the thing I love for a living. Soon after doing that, I realized how unprepared I was. I didn’t have a website done; I didn’t have any customers, didn’t have any leads. There was no place for me to start. So, I did some research. I used some free online tools to make myself a generic webpage. I’ve written some stuff about what I do and my previous experiences with cameras.
And after a month of waiting, the outcome was… Tragic! I barely got any clicks, let alone getting any orders. It turns out, not a lot of people want to send their cameras to a random stranger online. Broken or not, I was now terrified as I had no seeable income ahead of me that I could use for my rent or my bills.
But I wasn’t going to give up that easy. I still had some savings that I could use to pay my rent for a few more months so that I could find a way to get some revenue. I did some brainstorming. I’ve put some thought into it. And I’ve come up with my second-best idea so far! Instead of using my savings for my future rent, I was going to use them to buy some broken cameras, and then I would repair and modify them so that I could sell them for a higher price!
This way, I didn’t have to look for people who would trust a stranger enough to send their cameras to them. That was genius! so, I did precisely that. I’ve found some second-hand cameras online, and I’ve put in some effort into fixing and customizing them, and then I set up a website to sell them online.
The thing is, not everything went down as I planned. Even after another month, nobody was interested in my cameras. I was getting some clicks, but none of them turned out to be a customer. And worst of all, I didn’t have enough money to pay my rent.
That was the moment I truly felt like I’ve lost it all. So, here I was, sitting in a park at night, all but myself. Thinking about the mess I’ve got myself into. My landlord was knocking on the door every day; I was trying to dodge his calls as much as possible… I didn’t know how I could provide for my family.
And just as I had given up on everything, I’ve found hope. I went back home to think of a way out. And I’ve emailed over 1000 solopreneurs about their experiences with starting a business! Of course, I’ve received no answers. But just as the sun was coming up again, I’ve found a lead. One person out of 1000 reached out to me and asked me to hop on a video call!
